Mediterranean and North Atlantic. He suffered injuries after ship was
torpedoed and was medically discharged 4 Apr 1944.

Royal Navy, #P/188888. Initially joined the Forestry,
then transferred to Navy. Went overseas with 4th contingent. He served on
HMS Patrocolus, an armed merchant cruiser which was torpedoed by U-99. Then
battleship, HMS King George V and was on that ship when she helped sink the
German Battleship, Bismark. Also served on HMS Queen Elizabeth. In Dec 1942
he picked up LST 363 in USA, headed for the Mediterranean. Involved in
landings in Sicily & Italy. Wounded during landings at Salerno, Italy
and hospitalized in North Africa and England. After recovery he served on
battleship HMS Nelson bound for SE Asia. He was there when Lord Mountbatten
signed the peace treaty with the Japanese. Demobilized in England.

Quebec taking on a load of conscripts.

singing voice and led the congregation of St. James for many years.

4 for overseas draft. Arrived in Halifax on eve of the explosion aboard the
wooden battleship, HMS Niobe, which was badly damaged. Worked for 3 weeks
on burial parties and other tasks. During the war he worked primarily in
mine clearing and salvage duties. Demobilized in England.

Born 23 Sep 1898; son of John and Sarah (Quick). He was
3 weeks old when his father drowned in a terrible storm. Married Emily Ada
Knott in England; 2 children wrote book 'My Life at Sea' depicting his
early life in Lark Harbour and his long life at sea. Many harrowing
experiences, especially laying cable during WW2.

overseas with 18th contingent. Completed initial training on HMS Ganges
& Europa. Trained as gunner(PSSG). Served on HMS Badger, HMS Minos,
Duchess of Rothsey, HMS Philoctetes & HMS Beaver. He then served on HMS
Lucifer and MB and HMS Swanson, an NB. He demobilized 7 Mar 1946, and his
settled pay on release was 67 British pounds.

involved in the salt fish industry.

Merchant Marines, During the war he served as 2nd and
3rd officer on several ships. On 3 Sep 1944 as 3rd officer on SS Livingston
in route from Halifax to St. John's the ship was torpedoed by Kaptain Kurt
Petersen in U-541. The ship broke in two and he was injured, clung to a
piece of debris and was picked up by fellow crewman, Edgar Richards, in a
small life raft. Later they were picked up by Capt Reuben Robinson who put
the rest of the crew in a life raft. They were rescued by the Canadian Navy
and moved to the Lady Rodney.

1951; #SN1580. Joined infantry unit, Carleton and York and did initial
training at Aldershot, NS and Sussex, NB and then to Valcartier, PQ to do
advance & specialized training. Because of the European threat, was
selected to serve with 27th Brigade, hastily made up of recruits and WW2
veterans. He served two years in Northern Germany and was discharged in Jan
1954.

ammunition explosion aboard ship where he served as a gunner.

Born in 1898, son of John & Cecilia Ann. Moved to NS
following the war and worked at the Sydney Steel Plant as a bluer in the
wire and nail division. Married Mary Jane Rhymes from Burgeo; four
children. After Mary's death he married Agnes Townsend.

Cdn Army/WW1; Highland Regiment;
#471060. Ran away to Sydney and
joined the army at age 15. Did testing and was sent home. Within
three months was called up. Fought in many engagements. He was wounded in
the Battle of the Somme
and mother received a MIA message. He participated in the Battle of Vimy
Ridge where he was also wounded. He was very proud of his regiment, Cdn
Army and what they accomplished at Vimy.
He joined the Royal Navy WW2. Initially he was refused on medical grounds
as he had total disability from WW1. He Convinced
Dr. Webster that he was capable of being a sailor and the Doctor signed off
on his medical on the agreement that he never go near a sick-bay. He became
an ASA technician/specialist. He worked with anti-submarines programs and reached
the rank of Petty Officer.

After the war he stayed in Halifax
and worked for CHNS Radio Station. Married Olive Sheppard of Lark
Harbour in 1928. Walter
& Olive returned to Lark Harbour
where he ran a business for some years.
