Forestry & transferred to Royal Navy, # 256171. Initial training on HMS Europa then served on HMS Nemo, HMS Edinburgh Castle, HMS Nibi, HMS Africkindeer IV,  HMS Lana & HMS Canada. MMB253. He served in the Far East, Africa, the Mediterranean and North Atlantic. He suffered injuries after ship was torpedoed and was medically discharged 4 Apr 1944.

Born 24 May 1908, son of William & Sarah. Married Evelyn Sheppard who died before the war. Upon discharge married Rita Noseworthy; 7 children. He worked at Bowaters until retirement

George Stanley

Royal Navy, #P/188888. Initially joined the Forestry, then transferred to Navy. Went overseas with 4th contingent. He served on HMS Patrocolus, an armed merchant cruiser which was torpedoed by U-99. Then battleship, HMS King George V and was on that ship when she helped sink the German Battleship, Bismark. Also served on HMS Queen Elizabeth. In Dec 1942 he picked up LST 363 in USA, headed for the Mediterranean. Involved in landings in Sicily & Italy. Wounded during landings at Salerno, Italy and hospitalized in North Africa and England. After recovery he served on battleship HMS Nelson bound for SE Asia. He was there when Lord Mountbatten signed the peace treaty with the Japanese. Demobilized in England.

Born 25 Jan 1921, son of George & Rebecca. Married Mary Fletcher in Sep 1940; 9 children. Returned to NL and worked for Bowaters. Reside in Corner Brook.

Royal Navy/WW1 mostly on Armed Merchant Cruisers doing convoy escorts on the North Atlantic. The day the war ended his ship was in Quebec taking on a load of conscripts.

Born 18 May 1899; son of William & Priscilla. Married Alice Sheppard; 2 children. Fished for a living. George had a great singing voice and led the congregation of St. James for many years.

Born 5 Aug 1902; son of Gordon Willis & Cecilia (Penny); moved to Sydney, NS after the war. Married Sara Margaret Skeard on 21 Nov 1923; four children. Worked in the Steel Plant as an engineer. Lost a finger in Machinery and a leg at age 63.

Son of George & Elizabeth. Married Carrie Bishop who was the telegraph operator at Lark Harbour Post Office; 5 children. Fished with his father until 1929 then moved to Humbermouth and started a general store & ice-cream parlour until retirement in 1957.

Son of Samuel & Jane (Wheeler). Married Sarah Sheppard; 7 children. Worked in fishery and related industries.

Royal Navy/WW1; joined 16 Sep 1917 and waited until Dec 4 for overseas draft. Arrived in Halifax on eve of the explosion aboard the wooden battleship, HMS Niobe, which was badly damaged. Worked for 3 weeks on burial parties and other tasks. During the war he worked primarily in mine clearing and salvage duties. Demobilized in England.

Born 23 Sep 1898; son of John and Sarah (Quick). He was 3 weeks old when his father drowned in a terrible storm. Married Emily Ada Knott in England; 2 children wrote book 'My Life at Sea' depicting his early life in Lark Harbour and his long life at sea. Many harrowing experiences, especially laying cable during WW2.

Royal Navy, #JX316631.  Joined 15 Sep 1941, went overseas with 18th contingent. Completed initial training on HMS Ganges & Europa. Trained as gunner(PSSG). Served on HMS Badger, HMS Minos, Duchess of Rothsey, HMS Philoctetes & HMS Beaver. He then served on HMS Lucifer and MB and HMS Swanson, an NB. He demobilized 7 Mar 1946, and his settled pay on release was 67 British pounds. 

Born 16 Mar 1920, son of George J. & Maude.  Upon return married Elizabeth Childs; 5 children. John. Fished for years and worked for 20 years with Dept. of Highways.

Merchant Marines, Served during WW2 on ocean tug Havana which towed torpedoed or damaged ship in convoys. He also served on a cable ship and other merchant marine vessels. 

Born in Lark Hr. on 12 Oct 1901, son of George & Elizabeth; married Henrietta Sheppard; 4 children.  After the war he married Cristina Darrigan; 3 children. He was a businessman and for years involved in the salt fish industry.

Merchant Marines, During the war he served as 2nd and 3rd officer on several ships. On 3 Sep 1944 as 3rd officer on SS Livingston in route from Halifax to St. John's the ship was torpedoed by Kaptain Kurt Petersen in U-541. The ship broke in two and he was injured, clung to a piece of debris and was picked up by fellow crewman, Edgar Richards, in a small life raft. Later they were picked up by Capt Reuben Robinson who put the rest of the crew in a life raft. They were rescued by the Canadian Navy and moved to the Lady Rodney.

Born in Lark Hr. January 1900, son of John & Victoria, after the war he married Olive Selina Park in 1924; one daughter.

Born in Lark Hr. 18 July 1927, son of Isaac Moore & Anna. After the war he married Rhoda Childs; five children. He fished and worked at various jobs.

Cdn Army, Occupation Forces Germany. Joined 25 July 1951; #SN1580. Joined infantry unit, Carleton and York and did initial training at Aldershot, NS and Sussex, NB and then to Valcartier, PQ to do advance & specialized training. Because of the European threat, was selected to serve with 27th Brigade, hastily made up of recruits and WW2 veterans. He served two years in Northern Germany and was discharged in Jan 1954.

Born 18 Nov 1925, son of Stanley & Jane. Married Charlotte Kendell: 4 children. Roland worked in the lumber woods and at construction work.

Royal Navy/WW1; Received a serious eye injury in an ammunition explosion aboard ship where he served as a gunner.

Born in 1898, son of John & Cecilia Ann. Moved to NS following the war and worked at the Sydney Steel Plant as a bluer in the wire and nail division. Married Mary Jane Rhymes from Burgeo; four children. After Mary's death he married Agnes Townsend.

Walter Andrew

Cdn Army/WW1; Highland Regiment; #471060. Ran away to Sydney and joined the army at age 15. Did testing and was sent home.  Within three months was called up. Fought in many engagements. He was wounded in the Battle of the Somme and mother received a MIA message. He participated in the Battle of Vimy Ridge where he was also wounded. He was very proud of his regiment, Cdn Army and what they accomplished at Vimy.         
He joined the Royal Navy WW2. Initially he was refused on medical grounds as he had total disability from WW1. He Convinced Dr. Webster that he was capable of being a sailor and the Doctor signed off on his medical on the agreement that he never go near a sick-bay. He became an ASA technician/specialist. He worked with anti-submarines programs and reached the rank of Petty Officer.

Walter was Born 1900, son of Steven & Elizabeth Sheppard.

After the war he stayed in Halifax and worked for CHNS Radio Station. Married Olive Sheppard of Lark Harbour in 1928.  Walter & Olive returned to Lark Harbour where he ran a business for some years.

Royal Navy; #248014. Member of 13th contingent and completed initial training on HMS Ganges. Served on several ships including HMS Comorin, which was torpedoed and was picked up by a Chinese crew. He later served on an Aircraft Carrier in the Mediterranean and the Far East. Discharged 21 March 1946

Born 12 March 1917, son of Isaac & Hannah.  On return married Bertha Childs; 4 children. Horace was a fisherman.

Returned to work at the paper mill and retired at 65 yrs. Enjoyed gardening & fishing and liked to travel. He was born 13 Nov 1910
